FED:Thousands rally ahead of animal bill vote
By Melissa Jenkins
MELBOURNE, Aug 14 AAP - Several thousand people have rallied in Melbourne, urging federal
MPs to vote with their consciences this week on live animal exports.
Live exports resumed earlier this month after a temporary ban following a public outcry
sparked by footage of abuse at an Indonesian abattoir aired by the ABC Television's Four
Corners.
There are two bills opposing live animal exports expected to be voted on in the lower
house of federal parliament on Thursday.
There were rallies across Australia on Sunday calling for a permanent ban on live exports.
Some people at the event on the steps of the Victorian parliament wept as Animals Australia
investigator Lyn White recalled some of the cruelty she had witnessed at slaughterhouses
in Indonesia and the Middle East.
"I have stood in front of workers in a Dubai marketplace to stop them from throwing
Australian sheep three metres through the air like bags of wheat," she told the crowd.
"I have stood in Indonesian slaughterhouses for six consecutive nights witnessing a
level of brutality to animals that I hoped I would never see from our fellow human beings.
"This is not about animal rights, this is about ending human wrongs."
Ms White said the Gillard government could be celebrated as the one that ended the
live animal export trade.
Quoting former British politician William Wilberforce, who was a leader of the movement
to abolish the slave trade, she said: "You may choose to look away, but you can never
again say that you did not know."
Mr Bandt, who introduced one of the bills, said meat processed in Australia delivers
a 20 per cent better return to the economy than animals slaughtered offshore.
He urged Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to allow their
MPs a conscience vote on the issue.
"Members ... from all sides of parliament should vote with their heart and with their
head," Mr Bandt said.
"It's what the Australian people want.
"They should be standing up for jobs in Australia and they should be standing up for
what morally what is the right thing to do and that is to kill animals in a humane way."
Kaye Baillie, 48, travelled from Echuca on the banks of the Murray River to attend
the Melbourne protest.
"How could I not support banning the live export trade? It is just too terrible," she told AAP.
"If you are going to eat them (animals), couldn't you at least give them a decent life
and a painless death.
"It's really such a simple equation."
Mr Bandt's bill includes an immediate ban, while a separate bill introduced by independent
Andrew Wilkie allows for a three-year phase out.
Neither bill is likely to pass the lower house as the federal government and the opposition
want the live export trade to continue.

Qld: More than 200 stranded at Queenslan airport
SYDNEY, Feb 2 AAP - More than 200 passengers are stranded at Queensland's Whitsunday
Airport as wild weather prevented two planes from landing at nearby Proserpine yesterday.
Authorities refused to allow the Jetstar jets permission to land saying it was too
dangerous in the extreme weather, leaving about 230 passengers stuck at the north Queensland
holiday destination.
A third Jetstar aircraft was turned back from Hamilton Island due to the wild weather.
Jetstar spokesman Simon Westaway said the Bruce Highway was closed due to flooding,
cutting off the airport and preventing the airline bussing stranded passengers to another
location.
Heavy rain fell across north Queensland yesterday, causing several rivers to flood
between Cairns and Mackay.
"To say it was extremely tough flying conditions would be an understatement," Mr Westaway said.
"Safety is our number one priority."
The airline provided vouchers for the stranded passengers to buy food during their
enforced night in the terminal.
Jetstar plans to adjust its schedule and put on an extra flight today to get the stranded
travellers to their destinations.
Police will check flood waters on the Bruce Highway this morning to see if it is safe
to re-open the road.

Experian Hitwise, an online competitive intelligence service, and AdGooroo, a provider of digital marketing intelligence and keyword tools, announced a global agreement to jointly offer customized research and analysis services.
AdGooroo's advertiser intelligence data provides impression- based competitive intelligence on pay-per-click (PPC) and online ad display campaigns. This complements the online consumer behavior insights mined from Experian Hitwise's sample of 25 million Internet users worldwide. Together, the two data sources offer the first ever set of end-to-end digital marketing insights that track consumer and advertiser interactions from initial impression through action.
"As search marketing grows more sophisticated, the ability to correlate competitive advertiser behavior with its impact on consumer search behavior offers advertisers a tremendous advantage," said Luke McGuinness, vice president, partnerships and product management, Experian Hitwise, a part of Experian Marketing Services. "This relationship provides marketers and agencies with the means to get a full view of both advertiser and consumer behavior."
"The combination of these two powerful data sets helps brand marketers understand both how effectively their paid search campaigns are being managed as well as how to tap into the full potential of every marketing dollar," said Richard Stokes, founder and CEO of AdGooroo. "This brings the industry one step closer to achieving full transparency into the often complex relationship between audience and advertiser."
This research will help clients optimize their online advertising campaigns by more effectively analyzing how competitors manage their campaigns, including analysis of keyword selection, coverage management, and campaign performance. The integrated custom offerings from AdGooroo and Experian Hitwise will be available globally.

Vic: Billionaire Pratt gravely ill
MELBOURNE, April 21 AAP - Billionaire packaging tycoon Richard Pratt, 74, is gravely ill.
Federal Victorian Labor MP Bill Shorten, a family friend, said he met with the Pratt
family on Monday night.
Without going into the reasons for Mr Pratt's illness, Mr Shorten told ABC Radio that
Mr Pratt was in a serious condition.
"I can explain, but I'm going to leave that for the family out of respect," Mr Shorten said.
"I think it's fair to say that Richard Pratt is currently held in very high respect
by many many people in Victoria and Australia, he employed thousands of people in good
jobs.
"And his family do great social work, not only in Australia but overseas."
Under further questioning about the nature of Mr Pratt's illness, Mr Shorten said "gravely
ill" was the only way he would describe it.
The controversies surrounding Mr Pratt in recent years had been tough, Mr Shorten said,
but he is a strong man.
"I can't claim to see into his mind and his morale at the moment and he is ill, and
he has and is a big contributor to public life."
Mr Pratt was an actor, businessman, involved heavily in the community and is worthy
of the nation's respect, Mr Shorten said.
As one of Australia's richest men and biggest philanthropist, Mr Pratt is worth more
than $5 billion.
He built up the Visy packaging company into an international empire, but came into
strife over alleged price fixing.
The Federal Court is deciding whether the evidence Mr Pratt gave in a 2007 civil case
can be used in a criminal trial against him.
He faces four charges of giving false or misleading evidence to the Australian Competition
and Consumer Commission (ACCC) at a hearing in 2005.
At the time, he denied a conversation he allegedly had about price fixing with Amcor
chief executive Russell Jones at a hotel in Melbourne in 2001.
It is believed Mr Pratt has prostate cancer and is resting in his home in the wealthy
Melbourne suburb of Kew.

FED: Grocery business almost impossible to break into: Franklins

FED: Grocery business almost impossible to break into: Franklins
SYDNEY, April 1 AAP - Australia's grocery industry is so competitive that a new company
large enough to challenge Coles or Woolworths can only enter the market by acquisition,
a competing grocery chain says.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) kicked off its inquiry today
into the long-standing issue of rising grocery prices, with Coles and Woolworths named
as commanding 80 per cent of the packaged food business.
Another retailing group, Franklins Supermarkets, and a related company were acquired
by South African retailer Pick `n Pay in 2001 and now operates 80 Franklins sites across
NSW.
Franklins managing director Aubrey Zelinski and finance director Roni Perlov appeared
as witnesses to the ACCC inquiry in Sydney today.
Mr Zelinski said Franklins lost 13 per cent of its customer base when Coles and Woolworths
introduced petrol vouchers a few years ago.
"For an independent who doesn't own petrol, it's very difficult to compete," he told the inquiry.
He also said local council red tape and the scarcity of appropriate sites could delay
the establishment of new stores for up to six years.
Coles was due to open a store at a Sydney location where Franklins had been refused
a renewal of its existing lease, he said.
Mr Zelinski welcomed the inquiry, saying the business environment in Australia hindered
new entrants in any market.
"In terms of how they (Coles and Woolworths) use their buying power and their muscle,
hopefully is what will come out in this inquiry," he told reporters outside the hearing.
"I think that our business is a new business and the cost to do business in Australia
is a lot more difficult than anywhere else in the world," he said.

Burbidge, Eleanor Margaret
Burbidge returned briefly to England in 1972 on leave of absence to become director of the Royal Greenwich Observatory, now situated at Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex. She declared her aim to be to strengthen optical astronomy in Britain. But as the 98-inch (2.5-m) Isaac Newton telescope at Herstmonceux was only a few hundred feet above sea level and sited above a marsh her opportunities for observation at the Royal Observatory were somewhat limited. A little over a year later, in October 1973, Burbidge resigned amid much speculation declaring simply that she preferred “to return to her own research work rather than devote a major part of her time to administrative matters.”
In 1948 she married Geoffrey Burbidge a theoretical physicist, and began a highly productive partnership. They collaborated with Fred Hoyle and William Fowler in 1957 in publishing a key paper on the synthesis of the chemical elements in stars. They also produced one of the first comprehensive works on quasars in their Quasi-Stellar Objects (1967). She had earlier recorded the spectra of a number of quasars with the 120-inch (3-m) Lick reflector and discovered that their spectral lines displayed different red shifts, probably indicating the ejection of matter at very high speeds.
The first accurate estimates of the masses of galaxies were based on Margaret Burbidge's careful observation of their rotation.

Fairfax planners to vote on Huntington complex.(Business Times)(Property Lines)
The Fairfax County Planning Commission will vote March 22 on a proposal to build 600 apartments and 275,000-square-feet of commercial space next to the Hungtington Metrorail station.
D.C. developer Stout & Teague has proposed 600 apartments, 65 town houses, 250,000 square feet of office space and 25,000 square feet of retail space on the 60-acre tract.
The firm has also proposed a garage to replace the 924-space parking lot that now sits on the land.
"It's a great site on one of the highest elevations in the area," says Neel Teague, vice president of Stout & Teague.
The Planning Commission held a hearing on the proposal March 1. If the planners endorse the project, it will be sent to the county's Board of Supervisors for final approval.
Some citizen groups say the project could increase congestion on nearby Huntington Avenue, a busy thoroughfare in the area.
But Stewart Schwartz, executive director of the Coalition for Smarter Growth, a collection of local environmental and civic groups, says the development could reduce traffic over time.
Ideally, the residents of the new housing units would use the Metro to get to work, he says.
"And hopefully, the retail component of the project will be commuter-serving retail like dry cleaners, so people won't have to hop in their car to run errands when they get home from work," Mr. Schwartz says.
The Huntington area will benefit from the revival of Route 1, a blighted highway that stretches through Northern Virginia, according to Mr. Teague.
In addition to the Stout & Teague project, Bethesda developer LCOR is planning a high-rise building in Huntington. New retail development is also planned, Mr. Teague says.
MORE DATA CENTERS
Qwest Communications has signed a $25 million, 10-year lease for two data centers planned at Dulles International Park in Sterling, Va.
Trammel Crow Co. will develop the buildings, which total 153,600 square feet. The D.C. real estate firm also arranged the leases.
This is the second time the companies have done business together in the park. In 1999, Trammell Crow developed two buildings totaling 108,701 square feet for Qwest, a national Internet-hosting company.
Construction on the new data centers will is scheduled to begin this summer and be completed between January and April 2002.
Data centers are used to house the heavy technology equipment that allow the Internet and other telecommunications systems to function. The centers usually feature extra-thick walls and floors to protect the machinery inside.
Trammell Crow is also scouting tenants for two data centers planned in Northeast D.C.
The Kay First Telecom Center at 101 K St. NE will be a 47,892-square-foot center, and the 52 L Telecom Center at 52 L St. NE will feature 112,000 square feet. The buildings, scheduled for completion by fall 2002, will be the first data centers built in the District without tenants lined up.

As part of the agreement between Multi-Link and Glenayre, Multi-Link will purchase approximately $2.5 million of Glenayre's MVP equipment over the next three years. This equipment will be used to upgrade Multi-Link's system so it can provide the most advanced unified messaging services to their customers.
"We are delighted that Glenayre has taken this step to develop a closer relationship with Multi-Link," said Nigel Alexander, chief executive officer of Multi-Link Telecommunications, Inc. "Having Glenayre as a significant stockholder will allow us to see farther into the future as Unified Messaging, Internet-based Wireless Messaging and other exciting new technological developments become part of our everyday lives."
"Glenayre plans to purchase these shares of Multi-Link because we believe that the company's plan for consolidating the small business voice messaging marketplace and providing a unified messaging service bureau are sound strategies," stated Eric Doggett, president and chief executive officer of Glenayre. "Multi-Link truly understands the needs of the small business customer and we look forward to partnering with them to develop systems and services that will improve the way Multi-Link customers communicate while benefiting Glenayre's entire product portfolio and customer base."
Following the investment Glenayre will have visitation rights at Multi- Link's board meetings. Glenayre executives will also provide advice and guidance to Multi-Link as that company executes its business plan. Stated Warren Neuburger, Glenayre's executive vice president - Products, "Multi-Link is a natural fit for Glenayre as Multi-Link begins to expand their presence in the marketplace and transition from a provider of basic voice mail services to one that provides a wide-range of unified messaging services to their small business and residential customers."
About Multi-Link Telecommunications, Inc.
Multi-Link's goal is to become a significant force within the United States' Unified Messaging service industry, which is predicted by industry analysts to be an important market over the next few years. At present Multi- Link provides advanced voice messaging services to businesses and homes. Multi-Link plans to achieve this market position by acquiring voice messaging subscribers through a national industry consolidation plan and then to transition Multi-Link customers to Unified Messaging services as market demand for these services increase. By continuing with the company's strictly defined acquisition plan, Multi-Link believes it will be able to continue its profitable growth and that the company will be well positioned to participate in the rapidly developing Unified Messaging market in the future.

eBay Allows Access to Morrisville, N.C.-Based Internet Auction Firm.
Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News
Dec. 1 -- MORRISVILLE, N.C. -- AuctionRover.com today will announce a deal with the world's largest auction site that will put the latecomer to the auction portal party in front of the competition.
AuctionRover and eBay confirmed that their agreement will give the Morrisville auction-searching Web site the right to provide access to eBay's auction listings. Details of the licensing agreement weren't disclosed.
The agreement is the first of its kind since eBay announced in late September that it didn't want other Web sites to search its listings without first getting eBay's approval. Since then, eBay has blocked sites like Bidder's Edge and AuctionWatch.com, which compete with AuctionRover, from completing such searches.
"We think this gives us a big competitive advantage," said Scot Wingo, AuctionRover's co-founder and chief executive officer.
Web surfers can go to AuctionRover.com to search a number of auctions for a particular item and pick up tips on online bidding. Launched in October, the site joined an Internet niche dominated by the likes of Bidder's Edge, which was started a year ago.
But AuctionRover was first to ink a deal with eBay. "We've taken a very different approach," Wingo said. "They [competitors] took an anti-eBay approach."
While Bidder's Edge responded to eBay's no-search decree by taking out an ad in The New York Times blasting the company for being anti-open market, AuctionRover officials traveled to San Jose, Calif., to meet with eBay and hammer out a deal.
"This is a recognition that eBay has the right to license the information available on its site," said Kevin Pursglove, eBay's senior director of communications. "The heart of this agreement will allow searchers via AuctionRover to search our site. ... It better serves the eBay users."
But one analyst wondered whether eBay does have the right to limit this type of searching, called "spidering," which is the same technology search engines use to identify Web sites that match certain topics.
"The ripples for this kind of announcement will affect the very course of e-commerce," said Evie Black Dykema, an analyst with Forrester Research. "If eBay gives preferential treatment to one site or another, it assumes that it's the right of the retailer to limit who [searches] them. That's the question here: Does the retailer have that right?"
Pursglove thinks so. He said eBay will continue to work with other auction portal sites and that the AuctionRover agreement was by no means exclusive.
Still, it gives AuctionRover at least a temporary leg up. In an effort to retain the advantage, the six-month-old company is opening a San Francisco business development office to establish a presence closer to Silicon Valley.
"It shows how important the eBay relationship is to us," Wingo said.
By putting a business development office in California but keeping its programmers in the Triangle, "away from the distractions of the Bay Area," Wingo figures AuctionRover can have the best of both worlds.
AuctionRover searches the listings on 35 different auction sites, including eBay, and offers a range of buyer and seller services on its Web site. The company, which took $3 million in venture capital from Draper Atlantic in late September, would not disclose the number of visitors that have registered on its site.

AUDIOVISUAL : SECTOR CONFRONTS ITS ONLINE FUTURE.
As announced in Europolitics 4232, the European Commission opened a consultation of audiovisual professionals, on 13 July (running until 18 November). It seeks their views on how to facilitate the distribution of audiovisual works (TV and films) online. The executive considers that national rules on distribution and protection of copyright represent a hindrance to this market.
"Consumers increasingly expect to be able to watch anything, anywhere, any time and via any of a number of devices (TV, personal computer, game console, mobile media device). Business models have to evolve rapidly to keep pace with the ever faster pace of technological change," reads a statement by the EU executive.
These options do not rally unanimity. The European commercial televisions represented by ACT drew red lines, on 12 July, stating that "business rules must not be abandoned in the online world because broadcasters will continue to invest in content only if they stand a reasonable chance of making a return".
The green paper serves as a starting point for a general debate: "Should the regulatory framework be adapted to enable firms in the sector to develop new business models, to give creators of content new distribution channels and to give consumers better access to content across Europe?" If so, how?
These contributions will come on top of work by Commissioner Michel Barnier's staff on a legislative proposal on collective copyright and a revision of the 2001 directive on compliance with intellectual property rights.
TV, CINEMA, COPYRIGHT
The green paper focuses on three main themes: online cinema, internet television and remuneration of authors and performers for exploitation of their rights online. On TV, the Commission suggests the idea of a European passport' for copyright and asks whether it could benefit online distribution of audiovisual works.
On cinema, considering the territorial approach taken by producers when granting distribution rights, the Commission wishes to zero in on the constraints that hinder the development of multi-territory platforms of online films. Are current film financing and distribution models, based on territorial systems, relevant in the digital context, it asks.
For authors and performers, the Commission raises the question of an "inalienable right" to be remunerated "proportionally" for exploitation of their rights online. This right could be granted at European level. In that case, should such a right necessarily be managed by collective rights management societies, asks the Commission.
FRANCE HAS NOT FORGOTTEN IRAN - ALAIN JUPPE.
Paris -- The following information was released by the French Embassy in the United Kingdom:
Two years ago, in an unprecedented protest movement, millions of Iranians expressed, with courage and hope, aspirations very similar to those everyone is watching with admiration develop in the Arab world today: simple, irrepressible and universal aspirations for freedom, justice and dignity.
Since then, unfortunately, Iran has set out along a very different path, a dead-end path: that of repression and authoritarianism, self-absorption and isolation - in other words, the path rejected by all young people in the region.
So let us not forget Iran. For two years, the human rights situation has been constantly worsening, as shown by the growing number of reports reaching us of large-scale arrests, maltreatment and torture undergone by detainees, arbitrary sentences and the increasing number of death penalties, now more than 300 in total since the beginning of the year.
Let us not forget Iran, where attacks on freedom of information and expression have become systematic, with monitoring and censorship of the Internet, the arrest of journalists and the conviction and imprisonment of committed figures like the film-maker Jafar Panahi, sentenced to six years' jail and a 20-year ban on his creative activities, and the lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, who is serving an 11-year prison term.
Let us not forget Iran, where the Iranian authorities are denying their people the right to demonstrate peacefully and where the leaders of opposition movements, Mir Hossein Moussavi and Mehdi Karroubi - one a former prime minister, the other a former chairman of parliament - are being held in isolation, in contempt of the law.
In accordance with her values, France cannot remain silent in the face of such a deterioration in the situation of fundamental rights. In Iran as elsewhere, there must be no compromise on the principle of individual freedoms: of opinion, expression and peaceful demonstration; there must be no compromise on respect for the dignity due to every human being. These universal values - upheld so bravely by the people of the region, including Iran - are shared by France.
It was in this spirit that France, with her European partners, adopted sanctions against 32 leaders of the crackdown in Iran. It is in this spirit that we call on the Iranian authorities to respect the right to freedom of expression, release immediately all arbitrarily detained prisoners, and give Messrs Moussavi and Karroubi back their full freedom.
The denial of the Iranian people's aspirations, and the pursuit of a nuclear programme with no credible civilian purpose and in violation of international law, are leading Iran to become a pariah in the community of nations. In view of the choices made by Iran's leaders, that community today has no option but to step up the sanctions against them.
This is all the more regrettable because Iran could play a leading role in the region, a role which is hers by right. As heir to an age-old civilization respected and admired by all, the Iranian government could forge a relationship of friendship and cooperation with France. That, however, means making the choice of opening up and not closing in on itself.
So, at a time when the young people of the Arab world are finally regaining their freedom, I want to say, on this anniversary date, that we have not forgotten the Iranian people and that our thoughts go out to them, too, and particularly the young people among them, who also have the right to a future of freedom./.

11 activists of Hizb ut-Tahrir group convicted in Tajikistan.
DUSHANBE, April 27, 2011 (TCA) -- A court in Sughd province has sentenced eleven activists of the banned religious extremist Hizb ut-Tahrir group, including two citizens of Uzbekistan, to jail terms of three to twenty year, news agency "Asia-Plus" reported. The Sughd regional court completed consideration of criminal proceedings instituted against nine local residents and two Uzbek nationals on April 26. They were found guilty of active membership in the banned extremist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir and sentenced to prison terms of 3 to 20 years. The source at the Sughd regional court says they were charged with inciting ethnic and religious enmity, calling for the overthrow of the constitutional order, organizing extremist group and participating in political parties or public and religious associations that are banned in Tajikistan for extremist activities. "Two Uzbek nationals were found guilty of illegally crossing the border, inciting ethnic and religious enmity and calling for the overthrow of the constitutional order and sentenced to 14 years in prison each," the source added. We will recall that eleven other members of the Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir were convicted in northern Tajikistan in late March. They were sentenced to prison terms of 4 to 20 years. According to the Sughd prosecutors office, local prosecutors instituted criminal proceedings against 90 members of the banned extremis organizations, including 42 Hizb ut-Tahrir activists, in 2010. Over the first three months of this year, the Sughd prosecutors office has instituted criminal proceedings against 29 members of Hizb ut-Tahrir. The Supreme Court of Tajikistan formally labeled the banned Hizb ut-Tahrir Islamist group as an extremist organization on March 11, 2008. The ruling followed a request submitted to the court by Tajik chief prosecutor. Although the group has been outlawed in Tajikistan since April 2001, the ruling means even tighter restrictions on the group's presence on the Internet and its use of media to promote its ideology.

Change in FCC Regulations Proves a Boon for Virginia Real Estate Developers.(Originated from The Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, Va.)
Dec. 24--A change in FCC regulations is turning out to be a boon for two commercial real estate developers in Hampton Roads.
The Runnymede Corp. and Olympia Development Corp. are building offices that will allow communications companies to consolidate their operations under one roof. A Federal Communications Commission rules change signed into law in February allows one company to own as many as seven radio stations (four FM and three AM) in Hampton Roads, up from a previous limit of two AMs and FMs each.
"The consolidation has created a need for a couple of larger spaces, which have allowed some people to get some projects off of the ground that would have waited a while," said Jonathan Guion, an industrial specialist at S.L. Nusbaum.
The Runnymede Corp. is building a 40,000-square-foot office warehouse called TRC Center, Phase II, in which Virginia Beach-based Max Media Inc. will consolidate its local radio stations, said sources close to the deal.
York, Penn.-based Susquehanna Radio will move its three radio stations, operating out of two different locations, into one spot -- a two-story building being constructed in Virginia Beach by Olympia Development Corp., said Bill Whitlow, vice president and general manager for Susquehanna.
By moving its stations -- WLTY-FM, WGH-AM (The Score) and WGH-FM (Eagle 97) -- into one building, Susquehanna can cut administrative costs, facilitate meetings and provide "one-stop shopping for the advertiser," Whitlow said. Construction began Monday.
Susquehanna will move into the 30,000-square-foot, class A office between Greenwich Road and Southern Boulevard by August 1997, Whitlow said. It will occupy the top floor, or 15,000 square feet, of the two-story building, which is located near the new Department of Environmental Quality headquarters. About 80 people will be involved in the move, Whitlow said.
Susquehanna will pay $14 per square foot for its space, he said. The building costs about $3 million, sources said.
Max Media Inc., involved in a similar move, owns four FM radio stations: WWDE (2WD) and WNVZ (Z-104) in Virginia Beach; WFOG and WJQI (The Point) in Norfolk. It will consolidate all its local stations in Virginia Beach at the new TRC Center on Cleveland Street across from Cox Communications' headquarters. Max Media will occupy about 15,000 square feet, or one-third of the space. About 75 to 80 people will work in the TRC Center, and Max Media has signed a 10-year lease, sources say.
"It's a flex-type building, it's oriented to service people who have a variety of needs, office, storage or technical benchspace," said Michael Barrett, Runnymede's CEO. "It appeals to firms that have all those needs but need to have them all in one place."
Max Media's new building is scheduled for completion by the second quarter of 1997.
Although Gee's Group, a Virginia Beach real estate group, broke ground on a speculative office building called Southport Centre in October, other firms are wary of following in its footsteps.
"We believe there is considerable strength in the market for this light industrial, flex space," Barrett said. "The occupancy rate nationwide is probably approaching 95 percent. In our view, it's a market in balance. The need for new product and new firms is quite clear."
This type of consolidation fits into the Beach's economic development strategy. "Our No. 1 target area is communications," said Don Maxwell, director of the Department of Economic Development.
Maxwell said the communications industry has several benefits: it is associated with higher-level income, it requires support services from other companies in the community and it gives the Beach exposure on the airwaves and among national media. Plus, the environmental impact of the firm on density is low, and the return on investment is good, he said.

Bango Button lets users push digital content to mobile phones from their social site, media site, or blog.(NEW PRODUCTS)
Bango launched the "Get On My Mobile" Bango Button so that anyone using a social Web site, media sharing site, forum, or blog can make their content available to mobile-phone users worldwide at the push of a button.
The Bango Button bridges the gap between the PC and mobile worlds by using the simplicity of the Internet, opening up the world of content to mobile users. Bango Buttons are perfect for popular sites such as Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Flickr, Bebo, Friendster, LinkedIn, Blogger, Orkut, and WordPress.
Bango has made it easy to push content, such as photos and music files, from a PC Web page to a user's mobile phone--no special mobile expertise is required. A Bango Button can link directly to photos stored on a PC Web site, automatically resizing them for different mobile phones and presenting the download page. This removes the need to make them mobile ready or have them located on a mobile Web site.
"Like most bands, we have a MySpace site where people can listen to our music and see when we have gigs coming up," said Claudio Tinnirello of the Californian electro-pop band Moonlife. "Bango Buttons on our site at www.myspace.com/moonlife make it easy for our fans to get wallpapers and ringtones onto their mobile. They'll even be able to get a map of where we'll be playing, making it easy to find the venue."
According to research firm Yankee Group, 33 percent of all Internet users regularly access social network Web sites. "An increasing number of consumers want anytime, anywhere access to their online communities and the content that lives there," said Jill Aldort, Yankee Group senior analyst. "Unfortunately, sharing that content across platforms is far from seamless. The recent buzz around open platforms is just that--still buzz for now."
By overcoming the technical challenge of getting digital content into the hands of mobile-phone users, Bango enables many more people to publish content to mobiles. After a successful beta program involving thousands of users, the wider PC community now has a chance to test drive the Bango Button.
Anyone can create their own "Get On My Mobile" Bango Button. To do it, visit www.bango.com/button, and insert the generated code into your site, next to a piece of content you want to share. When users click on your button, they get a unique short URL which they can enter into their phone browser to get the content on their mobile. Optionally, a charge can be assigned to a piece of content to create a revenue stream for the content creator.
"I can link a Bango Button to a party photo on my Facebook site and let my friends easily get it on their mobile," said Ray Anderson, CEO of Bango. "It's difficult for them to find the same photo on the Facebook mobile site because they have to go to the home page of the Facebook mobile site and navigate around to find the photo they want."
A Bango Button can also link directly to a mobile Web site or to mobile versions of popular PC sites such as YouTube or Flickr. They can also be embedded in emails and easily sent to friends.

CSI's Executive View Helps Fight Fraud, Money Laundering.
Computer Services, Inc., (CSI) (Pink Sheets: CSVI.PK) has expanded its popular information access system, Executive View, to include a monitoring process that can help customer banks to comply with regulations designed to thwart fraud, money-laundering and terrorism activities.
Regulatory changes and FDIC exam procedures instituted since 9/11 place increased emphasis on financial institutions' risk-based policies and procedures; monitoring of risky accounts; and deterrence of terrorist financing that funds its operations under the reporting thresholds. In addition to the anti-money laundering programs and monitoring of high-risk customers banks are required to do, they should also watch for suspicious activity in bank accounts, closely monitor suspicious fund transfer patterns, identify customer efforts to avoid record keeping or reporting, and spot activity that is inconsistent with business patterns.
Over 20 different views of fraud related information in Executive View can help CSI customers to comply with these requirements. Bankers simply identify and quantify the risk of accounts that may need monitoring and Executive View will compare unusual transactions or transaction patterns to activity volumes and balances for the previous month or previous year. Bank executives can view information at a macro level and drill down to the individual account holder level, and information can be exported to programs such as Word and Excel for data merges and spreadsheet applications for in-bank reference.
Executive View has already dramatically changed the way bank executives work with CSI systems. It now promises to become a major asset in helping banks to comply with increasingly stringent anti-terrorism regulations.
