Fed: Ideology rather than cost may hold up baby scheme - Goward

Sex Discrimination Commissioner PRU GOWARD says a paid maternity leave scheme is inevitable.

Ans she says ideology rather than cost could be the stumbling block for the HOWARD government.

Ms GOWARD's proposed a 14-week, government-funded paid maternity leave scheme at costof $213 million each year.

The federal government hasn't made any commitment to the idea, but it says it hasn'truled it out.

Ms GOWARD's told ABC television that working motherhood's a fact of life, and Australia'slikely to fall into line with other western nations eventually.

Ms GOWARD says she doesn't believe cost is an obstacle to the government accepting her proposal.

But she says one of the issues facing the government is what sort of a package theycan afford, and which one would sit with their philosophy on industrial relations.
