P1: Premier Richard Court shelved plans to introduce legislation to control the sex trade
this year. Picture story of Jane and Jean-Claude Rochecouste - who have lived at sea for four
years - whose crippled sloop was towed into Fremantle after squalls which hit the WA coast on
Monday.

WORLD: China has activated its civil militia for the first time in 10 years and is training

FINANCE: United Group signed its biggest corporate deal since floating nearly five years
ago after buying Newcastle engineering icon Goninan & Co for $130 million. CP Ventures has
accused the Australian Securities and Investments Commission of being commercially naive. AAPT
is planning a bigger play in the mobile market with the $25 million cash purchase of code
division multiple access spectrum from OzPhone.
SPORT: The finals preparations of league leader Essendon suffered a major setback last
night when ruckman Steve Alessio and star centreman Joe Misiti were suspended by the AFL
Tribunal. Melbourne Cup winning jockey Harry McCloud lived again the moment of glory from 57
years ago when he watched himself for the first time win the 1942 Melbourne Cup on 33/1
long-shot Colonus.
